"The band that materialized for these sessions was up on a whole other level of deep end country for me and when I stepped up to the microphone for the first song I just about threw up, thinking I had finally lost my mind, and what the hell was I doing in the men’s room? The first song was ‘Pretend I Never Happened’ which Charlie Sexton and I sang at SXSW in 2017 on a “Willie Nelson and Friends” bill that Ray Benson had put together. It established the mood. It made me relax, because it’s such a mean morning song, that the day could only get easier once the wheels started turning. I mostly kept an ear out for any signs of giggling from Fred Newell and kept looking around at the band thinking are these guys really gonna let me get away with this? But nobody blinked, we just played cards."
