Live For Live Music: Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Cris Jacobs Band To Honor Jerry Garcia In Baltimore

On Thursday night, what would have been Jerry Garcia‘s 77th birthday, Greensky Bluegrass offered up a performance at Baltimore, MD’s MECU Pavilion. Baltimore locals Cris Jacobs Band handled the evening’s opening duties.

Greensky Bluegrass opened up their first set with a smooth pairing of “Dustbowl Overtures” into “Rune or Die” before working their way through “Can’t Make Time”, played for the first time since February. The quintet continued on with a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freight Liner Blues”, which was followed up by “Windshields”, the band’s take on Dawes‘ “Quitter”, “Blood Sucking F(r)iends, and a set-closing “All Four”.
Following a brief setbreak, the band returned to open up their second frame with “Fixin’ To Ruin” before offering up a number of fan-favorites including “Room Without a Roof”, “Bring Out Your Dead”, and “Kerosene”. For their encore, Greensky welcomed up Cris Jacobs Band for a three-song Grateful Dead segment in honor of Jerry Garcia. The nine-piece kicked things off with a debut of “Wharf Rat” led by Paul Hoffman on lead vocals. Jacobs then stepped up to lead the band through a Greensky debut of “Scarlet Begonias”. For the grand finale, Greensky guitarist Dave Bruzza and Cris Jacobs Band drummer Dusty Ray Simmons hopped between two drum kits as the band closed out their show with “Fire On The Mountain”.
