Mavis Staples joined Chris Stapleton, Maren Morris, Marty Stuart, Morgane Stapleton, Dave Cobb and others for a performance at Wednesday night’s CMA Awards. Staples led a performance at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena of The Staple Singers’ beloved favorite “I’ll Take You There.”
Chris Stapleton initiated the collaboration by leading a rendition of “Friendship,” which was recorded by The Staples Singers’ leader (and Mavis’ late father) Pops Staples on his posthumously released, Jeff Tweedy-produced album Don’t Lose This. Stapleton also recorded a version for his record From A Room: Volume 2. The ensemble then transitioned into the classic “I’ll Take You There” as the 79-year-old Mavis showed off her powerful vocals.
