Pigeons Playing Ping Pong headlined the Hot August Music Festival on Saturday night at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Maryland near their home base of Baltimore. PPPP would welcome fellow Baltimore musician and former The Bridge frontman Cris Jacobs for The Bridge original “Super Funk Regulator Robot Step Squad and Double Dutch Team.” Former Furthur guitarist John Kadlecik would join PPPP along with Jacobs on The Meters classic “Hey Pocky A-Way” for the encore.
Pigeons got things underway with “Somthin’ For Ya” followed by “Time To Ride” and “Poseidon.” PPPP then brought out Jacobs for “Super Funk,” a song Pigeons used to cover and perform with The Bridge in the early 2010s. Pigeons continued on with “Overrun,” “Sunny Day” and “Dawn A New Day.”
“Water” then segued into an “F.U.” sandwich that featured Tom Waits’ “Down In The Hole” in the middle. The Waits tune is the theme song for the Baltimore-based HBO show The Wire. PPPP then played “King Kong” ahead of the set closer “Ocean Flows.”
The band would retake the stage for The Meters’ “Hey Pocky A-Way” with both Jacobs and Kadlecik on guitar.
